A man has been charged in a weekend hit-and-run in Brampton that killed a newlywed from Newmarket and injured her husband.
Peel Region police say they arrested Walid Wakeel, 23, of Nobleton on Tuesday and charged him with criminal negligence causing death and bodily harm and failing to remain at the scene of an accident.
Two vehicles collided at the intersection of Highway 50 and Castlemore Rd. at about 12:30 a.m. Sunday.
The 30-year-old passenger, a Newmarket woman, was pronounced dead on scene. Her husband of only one week, a 31-year-old, was driving and suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the second vehicle ran from the scene, according to police, leaving the vehicle.
A warrant was issued for Wakeel’s arrest soon after. He was held for a bail hearing.
