A person is dead after being hit by a garbage truck near Adelaide and York Sts. early Tuesday morning, police say.
Witnesses said the person had been sleeping in the laneway behind a building in the city’s financial district when they were hit by the truck just before 6 a.m., police said. The truck was backing into an alleyway when the driver struck the person who may have been sleeping on the ground.
Emergency crews attempted to save the person’s life, but they were pronounced dead at the scene.
Adelaide St. is closed between University Ave. and York St. while traffic re-constructionists investigate, Toronto police spokesperson David Hopkinson said.
Police told reporters outside that the garbage truck company is cooperating with police.
Police gave no more information about the victim or the driver at this time.
